Chen Li

Concerning me
Chen Li was born December 31,1960. In 1980 I completed graduate school training.Soon afterwards I was appointed to teach at an advanced art institute. In September 1990 I also graduated from the specialized Yunnan Arts Design Academy. In 1997 I became a professional photographer.
Two years later I began photographing Chinese nationalities of Yunnan Province. In 2005 I began specializing in shooting pictures of minority people who were Christian.

Exhibition: Yunnan Provincial Museum

Preface
When my works are presented before you I feel peaceful comfort in my heart. First, it is because there are more and more people, through those photos, get to know about and understand the real situation of Chinese minority nationality Christian in Yun Nan province of China. Second, it is because my work has already been done, which should express by itself about everything it contained. During six years of work I experienced lots of difficulties and hard times. When I fell into bemusement and confusion my faith always gave me strength and hope. It was like a very bright light guided me so I did not lose my way but surely had correct direction. I have a desire that this way would show the specific and ordinary life of Christian and felicitously express real significance of the faith of Jesus Christ. Yun Nan province is situated in the south-west border area of China with many minority nationalities. Yun Nan province has 26 ethnic groups. Each of them keeps their own life style, traditional culture and original religion. When faith in Jesus Christ merged into their culture it rooted deeply into this land, sprouted and bore fruit. The faith in Jesus Christ has become rich and varied. The seed of gospel has resulted beautiful blossom in many minority nationalities such as Yi, Jinpo, Tibetan, Lisu, Nu and Miao. Most of these minority people live in very poor mountainous area. But the poor life and inclement environment are not able to move their faith. They are simple and honest. When I shared with their faith I shared their sorrows and happiness as well. When people sang songs to praise and glorify God I knew what I wanted to show is the real feeling of daily life among minority believers.

Yak-buttered tea and pancakes are the gifts from God’s grace. The children develop a good habit to say grace before each meal.

领圣餐
Eucharist (Tibetan)
The receiver of Eucharist is 86 years old. As an elder of the church he was cruelly persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and put into jail for 25 years. In those long years he never gave up his faith. His legs were beaten and broken because of his faith. After he was out of jail he kept preaching a sermon every Sunday, holding a stick, and doing some of the other works in the church. He often says that he wants to preach the gospel until his last breath.

Diary of visit to drug rehabilitation center

Diary of visit to drug rehabilitation center at the border of China and Myanmar

Time: August 19th, 2007—August 25th, 2007-10-27
Participants: Zhang Yongzheng (artist), Liu Jun (graduate student in Yunnan University), Gao Yunfei (photographer), Wang Jun (artist), Li Xu (photographer), Luo Fei (curator), Dou Yu (artist), Cheng Chunliang, Wu Yuequan and Zhou Zongyue

August 19th, (Luo Fei’s diary)
Ten of us started from Loft at 9:20.
On the way to our destination, most of us spent time sleeping, and talking occasionally.
We arrived in Mangshi at 7, and tried authentic Dai food and rice wine.
We wanted to find local traditional ‘café’, but Ha Fresh (a chain Café in modern cities) instead after over half an hour. We understood the ‘modernization’ of such a small border city. At last, we found a real local café in an old street, a really good one.

August 20th, (Luo Fei’s diary)
We started from Mangshi at half past eight, enjoying the pretty and neat scenery along the way.
The soil smelled very fresh and greens looked lovely because of the heavy rain days ago, which reminded me of Kikujiro no natsu. The spreading fields, foggy surroundings, and newly built road seemed specially designed for us, without any other’s disturbance. It was like somebody’s childhood, pursuing a dream when drove there.
We arrived at the drug rehabilitation center right at noon. I jumped out of car with camera. The house we lived in last year was empty and lifeless. There were plenty of big sugar canes and grass, with some cows eating. This was the first time for me to be here in the middle of summer.

August 20th, (Dou Yu’s diary)
We arrived at the drug rehabilitation center at the border of China and Myanmar. On our way there we could see a lot of propaganda on drug rehabilitation and AIDS prevention, which showed this area was seriously affected by drug abuse and AIDS caused by drug abuse. This place neighbors ‘The Kingdom of Drug’, Myanmar, and is the main rout for drug transportation. The main product here is heroin, or what we call ‘powder’, which is extracted from opium poppy. Heroin is a kind of nerve anesthetic and people can be addicted to it with fantasy. I used to think that drug abuse should be very far away from me but realized it is as common as smoking cigarette here. It is said that there were only the old and children here in the village and most of the young people were addicted to drug or died of drug. In the village with worst situation, only seven people don’t abuse drug.

This drug rehabilitation center gives people an impression of a Xanadu without locked gates, serious policemen but covered with green sugar cane. There is a road covered by grass, and at the end of the road there are two one-storey building. At that moment, a middle aged man with dark skin welcomed us with warm smile. From our team leader he should be the one in charge of this center, Mr. Dong. Mr. Dong is a man with family and children and he spends nearly all his time with people in the center. What’s precious is his family is in another country, but he is supported strongly by his family. His tone, voice and laughter touched everyone there and made us really want to help people there to quit drug. Who would know, however, Mr. Dong used to be a drug abuser 15 years ago and failed to quit for several time. His younger brother died of AIDS caused by drug abuse, and his mother died with a broken heart for that drug abuser son. There were a lot of tragedies going on after drug. Mr. Dong knew how harmful the drug was because of his personal experience and he was determined to help more people to get out of the hell of drug.

August 21st, (Dou Yu’s diary)
Today is my happiest day. 13 people from the center started to kill pig and preserve fish for the barbeque in the afternoon since morning. After we went through field paths and dense sugar cane field with firewood and bowls, it started to rain. But everyone was happy as long as the fire was on. Banana leaves were our dinner table and that open space was our house. Twenty of us shared the favor from God sitting on the ground. We were like brothers and sisters and forgot each other’s identity, eating together. After dinner, Mr. Dong led us to jump into river and begin a new game. In the setting sun, I saw new lives were growing and a new positive attitude toward life was being born.

August 22nd, (Dou Yu’s diary)
I raised two questions for all the people in drug rehabilitation center. Firstly, say one sentence about drug based on your own experience. Secondly, your expectation and what you want to tell other drug abuser. I received thirteen sentences, profound sentences. Everyone had too much to say, especially about drug. I could feel their bitterness and helpless at that moment. I had to mention one man: Zhen XX. He said: ‘I want to help more people to quit drug abuse, and I hope to work with other to let more people know about the harm of drug’.

Zhen XX, a man from X county. ‘I started to abuse drug from 1993. I knew nothing about drug and thought it was trendy to take some. After three times of taking drug I was addicted. Actually it is not very hard to quit drug if you just start for a short time, but it’s possible to quit if you repeated for too many times. I tried numerous times but all failed. I really hate abusing drug. When I was in Yingjiang, I needed to take one gram of heroin per day already, that amount kept increasing and I had to spend more than 50 Yuan per day. I spent every penny from family and had to cheat like a gangster. Later, I went to Myanmar to try to quit drug. I found a job of assembling motorcycle and everyday I could earn 150 Yuan. Life seemed to get better. But everyone around me took marihuana and alcohol and I could resist, taking drug again. In 2003 and 2004, I was penniless because of drug. I wanted to commit suicide with ephedrine and antipsychotic but failed. When I took drug, we share needles and I was infected with AIDS. Now, I am a HIV carrier. I have sore all over my body and I am bald. I though I would die but later my syndromes was all cured. Government pays to cure me. I will go to AIDS hospital regularly to help others with AIDS and to cheer them up.

LAYERS, DENSITIES, PROCESSES (an excerpt)

Tibor Csikós the obsessed circle-drawer, who keeps covering his layers, surfaces with the symbol of entirety, security, eternity -at last a symbol that bears the same meaning among all peoples- does not attempt at the impossible or some achievement. The expanding spaces, rhythms, the forms turning into brushwork, the intermediate negativ spaces excite him. When he applies more colours, when the takes a step toward the monochrome, in real the results of an unfolding and contracting pictorial reality interest him. When in an experimenting mood, he renders our task more complex with ocassionally turning the surfaces plastic. However, his art is not optical, nor of the pattern type. He is seeking the intermediate states between the graphical symbol and the pictorial form, the expanding space places the surfaces of the intersecting points more and more to the foreground, let it be discovered from among the density of grapes in a bunch or among the billions of planets and stars, bearing the colours of golden-brown or ultramarine blue -this is the real medium of the pictures, the layers of Tibor Csikó³® Are we mislead, as among the media -like the sky from behind the foliage- entirety hardly appears? I do not think so. This world made round by circles and spheres is entirety in itself. Csikós Tibor´s own universe.

“LOVE PROTECTION” exchange project

“LOVE PROTECTION” exchange project

A cultural exchange project between female Swedish and Chinese craftsmen in different arts forms, e.g. silversmith, textile designer, designer. The craftsmen would like to express the theme “LOVE PROTECTION” (the name of the project) by using several creative methods, compare the language of love in China and in Sweden, focus on love as a positive force in a sexualized society.

1. Background
Background and reason for the exchange?
Love is often described from “the reverse” in media, culture and society by means of exploitation, utilization (both sexually and financially), superficiality, illness and destructiveness. With this in mind, the participants of this exchange project would like to focus on “the right side” of love.
During the fall of 2006, there was an exhibition about HIV/AIDS at the Sino-Scandinavian culture centre TCG Nordica in Kunming, China. “LOVE PROTECTION” is a follow-up of the HIV/AIDS project, in which the artists would like to use creative methods as a preventive measure on the theme of love.
In the project “LOVE PROTECTION”, ten female craftsmen in different ages and from two different cultural backgrounds (China and Sweden) want to express love as play, warmth, depth, pulse, persistent power of life etc.
Both China and Sweden have a long and genuine tradition of craftsmanship. These female craftsmen would like to create an exhibition where love is not degenerated by using e.g. textile design and design – an exhibition about “the good love”.

Why have this exchanges pairs been chosen? Why are they representatives for the group/organization they represent?
Several of these female craftsmen have many years of experience of craftsmanship and design in their home countries, where they are established in the area of e.g. silversmith and textile design. These women also have a common desire to describe a different kind of love contrary to the one which is often shown in media and society – the kind of love that seeks its own, grabs, exploits and which mainly is connected with youth, outward appearance and capacity.

2. Common planning
Initiative, discussions about purpose and contents etc. – who have planned and how?
The planning of the project “LOVE PROTECTION” is mutual, where the Chinese participants are in charge of the program in China (part 1) and the Swedish group is in charge of the program in Sweden (part 2).
One of the participants in the Swedish group, Anneli Linder, is leaving for Kunming in November 2006, to meet with the Chinese group and plan the common work with the exhibitions which will be presented both at TCG Nordica, China and in Sweden (at Örebro konsthall and at Svensk Form on Skeppsholmen, Stockholm).
Since it takes a lot of time to produce craftsmanship, the two groups will start working separately in their home countries. During this time they will keep in touch by using e-mail.
Thereafter, the participants will meet for two weeks in China (spring 2007) and two weeks in Sweden (autumn 2007), when they will continue the creative process, which will result in two exhibitions and some workshops both in China and in Sweden.
When the participants of the project will meet in China, the first days will be used to make a more detailed program with a common schedule, which will come out of the suggestions that the two groups have presented.

3. Purpose of the exchange
The purpose of the “LOVE PROTECTION” exchange project is that the participants would try to find a common creative language that would describe how it will be possible to “protect love”.
When women from two different cultural backgrounds meet, different experiences, conceptions and images about love will emerge in an exciting way, where the big variation of ages also will contribute to a variety of expressions in different stages of life. The common desire of the female craftsmen is to describe a different kind of love than the one which we are often exposed to in society, culture and media.
