In Chinese mind, ‘aids’ is still something kept as a ‘non-of-my-business’ concept. There are few people who understand and care about the fact that this disease increases so fast, and has become a threat to the whole world. Because of the nature of Chinese culture the problem has been a hidden problem, resulting in even higher risks. It is difficult to talk about matters of who is infected, where could it or has it been passed on to, and how to stop it. Even now, when Chinese government take action and establish some works to help affected people, and control the spread, it is still difficult to know what is going to happen in this coming 10 years.

In China, art, music and culture has a very special ability to communicate and mediate messages. People are used to this way of getting information and understand different issues. Artists can speak a heart-to-heart language where age, gender and cultural differences do not matter.

30 artists from China, mainly Yunnan, have prepared an Art exhibition on the theme HIV/Aids. Oil paintings, Watercolor, installations etc. A small photo exhibition made by the Swedish Red Cross, House of Humanity in Malmö, in cooperation with Noaks Ark will also be shown. In cooperation with the local Red Cross department we will arrange workshops and lectures.

TC/G Nordica wants to encourage the Chinese artists to communicate with the society and, in this case, the people who work with HIV/aids related issues and care for those affected.

We hope to bring in more knowledge and understanding. We want to work long-term with this, in the sense that we hope people will continue to study and learn about the seriousness of the situation, and how to care for people. We want to use this way to support and help people who are infected.

Orientations; lectures, workshops etc. where we cooperate with different local and international organizations has been going on spring/summer 2006. We have also given opportunity for meeting people who have developed aids, and the family, friends, and society around them. A trip has been arranged for artists to go to areas close to the Burmanese border. We have also given opportunities for artists to directly contact scholars and other people with experience.

We are now discussing with the House of Humanity, Red Cross Malmö the possibilities of showing this exhibition in both Sweden and South Africa as well.
