Chen Lingjie

FROM THE LAND

To understand young artist Chen Lingjie’s oil painting, we must bear in mind two vital facts. One is that she comes from a peasant’s family, who has been laboring on land, generation after generation; the other is that she was born in the Jiangchuan County, a place of origin for Yunnan ancient culture. As early as two thousand years ago people in this area created great bronze culture.
As a peasant’s daughter, Chen Lingjie deeply loves her village and her native land. Although she has become an art teacher in a college, she still works with her family on the farmland whenever she goes back to her old home. Many of her paintings represent farm tools and articles for daily use, which embody her heartfelt love for country life.
If we have seen ancient Yunnan bronze work, which was created by Chen Lingjie’s remote ancestors, it is not difficult for us to see that her paintings have something to do with those great bronze works in terms of visual effect.
Land, country life and ancient Yunnan culture have nurtured the peasant’s girl and her art.
Modern art education is another important factor for Chen Lingjie’s development. The generation after “the Cultural Revolution” in China was faced with a period of economic development and opening to the outside world. Art education in China gradually freed itself from the Soviet Union and Russian system, and accepted world’s artistic achievement extensively. In the years when she learned art, China’s art creation had gained much more freedom and was very active in the world.
She was lucky enough to be admitted to the Second Oil Studio of Yunnan Arts Institute to study under Prof. Wu Jun and Prof. Dang Zhigang, from whom she developed a new realistic trend, that is, she emphasizes putting personal life experience and subjective ideas into objective representation.
As an excellent student from the Second Studio, Chen Lingjie had developed her own painting style by the time she graduated in 2001. This was shown by her graduation solo exhibition. She has kept painting for nearly five years since graduation. A great many of her paintings have been shown in Yunnan and other provinces and have won many awards. In this nice autumn she holds yet another solo exhibition at T-caf’ Nordica Gallery, Kunming Loft, where artists are doing contemporary art most actively. Congratulations!

Chen Lingjie
Female, born in Jiangchuan County, Yunnan Province, 1978. Graduated from the High School affiliated to Yunnan Arts Institute in 1997. Graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Yunnan Arts Institute in 2001. Has taught at the Fine Arts Department of Nie’er Music School of Yuxi Normal College ever since. Member of Chinese Artists Association.

He Libin

CV of Mr. He Libin
Mr. He Libin is a Na Xi people. He was born in Yao’an County, Yunnan Province, China, in 1973. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department, Southwest Normal University, China, in 1996. In 2003, Mr. He Libin achieved an advanced study class for postgraduates from Nanjing Art Institute, China. And now, he is a lecturer of Oil Painting Department, Yunnan Arts Institute, China, and a senior member of the Oil Painting Association.

Children in meeting

People sometimes ask me why I choose the subject Children in Meeting�, and I tell them that it was because someone picked at my previous works “Adults in Meeting”. Then I just switched to children. But it was also because I had just started teaching children in painting. Also, I was in charge of propaganda at the Political Department when I was in the army. Apart from preparing the setting for all kinds of meetings, writing slogans and taking pictures, I was also responsible for the Art Education of the children in the army. So while the adults were �in meeting�, their children were raising their hands to answer my questions. It is easy to associate the two scenes. Though it is a coincidence, to adopt children in my paintings is not really an act to help escape criticism. It is also the result of careful consideration.
Today, children are captured in a lot of works in their daily life. However, in Contemporary Art they appear as a symbol most of the time and don�t relate to real life. I might use them to symbolize a certain stage in life, where they either awaits have stopped growing or are waiting to do so. Of course, there are different points of view and explanations, but I do not wish to make any further comments on that. For example, the so-called theory of �children�s� politics� or simply a �children�s� game�, which is related to the politics of a certain period of time, just reflects some people�s attitude towards politics and our society.
Further, reflecting on the general quality of present day politicians, one can hardly relate them to the immaturity and irrationality that is typical of most children. The difference is that children�s immaturity is balanced with innocence, while in the adult�s case the game is full of deliberations and calculations. Therefore, in the analogy I hope I am not tarnishing the children�s images while eulogizing the adult�s ones.
