Lighting the world of life with paintings
By Hen-Xiaoxin
Shen Qin is a talented woman from Suzhou, and an outstanding student of China Fine Arts Institute. Since the end of 2000, her paintings mostly circles around the infant. These figures are sketched with a casual feeling and a succinct summary, omitting some detailed depiction. At this point, Shen Qin s style is very different from that of Neo-Zhe School -figure painting. But on the other hand, her strengthening of the expression of paintings continuously develops the Neo-Zhe School system.
These paintings are successfully combined with the technique of drawing, which is a big challenge to an artist s painting language and its expression.
An artist should enrich his painting language from the traditional resources. The traditional painting language has a rich legacy, which is a big resource for contemporary artists. Still, we must realize our own advantages and be proud of them. Many years ago, I had an idea: as Spinkle put it, the traditional painting language is a pure form, deeply rooted in the culture , a basic symbol of traditional wash paintings (one of Spinkle s notions). The traditional painting language should have three basic functions: the first is depicting (namely drawing the appearance); the second is freehand brushwork (emotion, idea and interest); the third is expression (directly express the intelligence and the power of life). Drawing the appearance has not been so important, freehand brushwork was exaggerated by the artists of Ming, Qing Dynasty. Only the expression function has not been sufficiently developed.
Shen Qin develops and transfers the expression function of the traditional painting. Her paintings are full of intelligence and life, which is not so easily achieved. Her paintings are relatively aloof and free, as relaxed as possible. She is not fussed about the so-called painting effect, interest or meaning. She tries to make her painting technique varied dry or wet, thick or light, She handles the brush with ease, sometimes use the midpoint, sometimes the side point, sometimes scraping sometimes dyeing lightly with the ink, which makes her paintings full of rhythm and strengthens the expression of her painting language.
The Infant series concerns the contemporary problems, there are various forms of vivid life, which are enough to strike the contemporary people s soul and waken the power of life. The medium painting language, is truly the traditional painting language, which is not entirely same to any artist or school, but a comprehensive development and contemporary transfer. Maybe some people would say that Shen Qin is influenced by Dumas from Belgium, but we should not forget that her cultural personality absolutely belongs to China.
