Brad Hawn lives in Modesto, California, where he was born in 1954. He is an engineer by profession and has been painting for six years now.

He finds the combination engineering/painting a relevant factor in his art.

I think the left and the right halves of the brain are much more closely connected than people in general believe. There is a technical side to painting that you just have to master, but then you need the creational side.

He wishes to communicate through his art, beyond the actual subject of his paintings.

In Brad Hawns own words:

Life’s experiences and my profession have prepared me to express myself through art. Engineering has been my profession for all of my adult life. Creating the structural system for buildings, solving problems and visualizing the end product have been the preparation for an expression through art. Many would say that the technical aspect of engineering and the expressive aspect of art are opposites; I am testimony that the thought might be wrong. Since watercolor is only so controllable. I am able to allow the medium to help me to be expressive. It is exciting to have a plan for painting and see that plan change and evolve as the painting unfolds, this allows for freshness in the piece as it evolves. I enjoy the challenge of creating expression and personality in the piece. I use bold color and strong composition with great contrast of lights and darks to describe my painting style. I feel most comfortable close to the subject with a reflective mood in the work. I feel I have succeeded if I am able to capture the emotion of the scene. I use a direct method of applying the pigment to the paper rather than a layered approach, which enables me to thrust myself into the painting.
