To: Nordicar English Corner
Recently, although I am happy for Nordicar’s 10th Anniversary, I really feel disappointed by Nordicar English Corner thesedays.
I regularly attended Nordicar English Corner since 5 years ago. Back in the old days, there were much more friendly and comfortable atmosphere. People came in about 7:00pm. They could choose to buy drinks and foods whatever they wanted. I remembered that there are indeed many people bought drinks because they did speak a lot and need drink. It was very common to see more than 50 people engaging in hot conversations and enjoying drinks. English Corner was often ended undetermined, as most people enjoyed talking to each other and forgot time. At that time, I often left after 11:00pm with many things still wanted to say.
Thesedays , a cup of 5-yuan water is compulsory BECAUSE PEPOLE, WHO CAN NOT AFFORD TO BUY 5-yuan WATER, IS NOT ALLOW TO PRACTICE ENGLISH. During just ONE HOUR English Corner (from 8:00pm to 9:00pm), host speakers speak merely as a routine duty and seldom show any interests, but in my impression they seem to more care about the finish time of English Corner. Host speakers frequently remainder people: “There are 15 minutes left!”, “There are 5 minutes left!”…, when the time is close to the end. Of course, the favourite ENDING MUSIC will always start in time, free host speakers and stop people talking. Apparently, there are not so many people around Nordicar any more.
I do have several advices:
1. Stop English Corner, start English Training Course if financial interests are more important. Running English Training Course should earn much more incomings than selling a cup of 5-yuan water. Besides, host speakers seem not to be interested in English Corner any more. Why don’t you let them focus on their art designs?
2. Improve English Corner. Let people choose what they want to drink, most of people coming Nordicar should not have a problem to afford to buy drinks. Besides, you won’t get much revenue from selling 5-yuan water, do you? Please, motivate host speakers, make them well-prepared and professional. They play important role in English Corner, and they should take responsibility.

First of all I want to express our appreciation for someone like you, who have participated in our English corner for five years. Quite astonishing.
We’re really sorry to hear about your experiences lately. However, there seem to be some misperceptions about how we work at TCG Nordica. Maybe a clarification would be in place.
First, the English corner sessions lasts from 8 PM til 9.30 PM, that is an hour and a half. Not one hour, as you say. I can verify this, since I’ve participated in at least ten EC’s these last two semesters. None of them have finished at 9 PM.
Another case in point is that we for some now have asked people to buy something to drink in the bar, if they wish to participate. It’s nothing new. And frankly, I don’t think five RMB is to expensive. As you are saying in your suggestions later, the people who come here can probably afford something to drink.
Your suggestions are good. In fact, they’re so good that we introduced them several years ago. The five yuan water bottle is only the minimum requirement. Of course a tea, coffee, beer or soda will do perfectly fine as well.
You suggest a training course. Each year we already offer English club, a chance to attend a course where you can deepen your knowledge about the English language. It costs a bit more than English corner, but it’s well worth the money. But it’s not that “finacial interests are more important”, as you suggest. Culture costs. I would encourage you to take a look at TCG Nordica’s culture activities. I’m confident that you will see that we have really worked according to the ambition to provide high quality performances, exhibitions and events to an affordable price. We will continue to do just that.
Finally, I want to wish you welcome back here. We hope to see you for another five years. At least.
