《剪刃》
在毛旭辉工作室的时候，我们都站着说话，巨幅剪刀包围着我们。还是春天，工作室已开始显得闷热.
毛旭辉的剪刀一画十年，剪刀于他而言，既赋予女性缝缝补补的原始本能，又充满着女性的艺术想象力,母亲曾经使用过的剪刀给予了他极大的吸引力。同时，它也与他十年前的关注权力与历史问题的《家长系列》有关,它强调了权力的日常性质.
中国是一个变化的社会环境，个体的变化对于社会变化，总是微不足道的。毛旭辉喜欢这样的变化，他认为新的变化为创作提供了新的可能性和新的想法。变化促使艺术家要不断思索个体和社会的关系，怎样以更冷静，理智的方式进入社会。毛旭辉说：当前，在艺术语言上,我画着八十年代时最不喜欢的东西，那时喜欢沉重, 苦涩和冲动。九十年代后，我认为我的作品更冷静，更理智。”
2005年5月13日晚20点，《剪刃》开幕仪式及酒会将在诺地卡举行。此次展览是毛旭辉在云南的第一个个人展出，将展示他的近作和部分早期作品。
毛旭辉的剪刀情结

5月13日创库诺地卡画廊将举行一场名为《剪刃》的作品展。这次展览是中国当代艺术界颇具影响的云南籍艺术家毛旭辉先生的个人作品展，这既是对他十余年来创作历程的一次回顾，又是对他新近创作成果的一次展示。
剪刀对普通人而言是再平常不过的日常用品，将其作为创作题材纳入作品也有人尝试过，但是十余年来一直乐此不疲孜孜以求的专注于同剪刀打交道，这种艺术家恐不多见，想必其中必定有他对剪刀的独特感受与情怀。
作为对“文革”时期美术异化为政治话语工具的反叛，彰显人本主义精神，向艺术本体的回归，85新潮美术运动在中国当代美术史中占据着重要地位。早在青年时代毛旭辉就同叶永青、张晓刚、潘德海等一批西南艺术家一道投身于这场轰轰烈烈的美术运动当中，关注思考着当时社会和人自身存在的问题，并成为其中活跃的闯将之一。89年以后中国的政治文化走向发生了很大变化，一个更加商业化社会到来了。面对这一变化，当时的毛旭辉感到很不适应，情绪较为低落，对家里日常生活物品的描绘成了他主要的消遣方式，这其中就包括剪刀。按照他的说法是无意中发觉剪刀形象在视觉上有强烈冲击力，随着画的过程的深入，这种无意识成为有意识，剪刀形象逐渐成为了画面中的主体形象占据了主要位置。对于这一点，我们通过这次作品展可以更清楚地感受到这种演变的历程。
在毛旭辉93、94直至98年以前的作品中，剪刀作为画面的主要表现形象，还未达到一种纯粹的符号化倾向。我们可以看到这时的画面还处于一种非平面化状态，除了剪刀这一主体形象外，画面上还有很多与他日常生活相关的背景，有他曾经生活过的小区楼房，有室内空间等，剪刀就拼贴在这些背景之上。这时的剪刀与背景间还存在着某种意义上的关联，他似乎想通过剪刀与背景共同构成的画面意义空间来阐释想表达的思想观念，对他而言剪刀还仅是一种表现情感的“工具性”载体、对象，剪刀本身还不具备独立表达画面意义的能力，还有赖于背景的辅助支持，这也是他剪刀系列的最初探索阶段。
98年到现在，随着探索的不断深入，在他的画面中其它东西被逐渐挤出画面，只剩下越来越符号化的剪刀形象，整个画面空间趋于平面化。当某一形象完全趋于符号化时，从某种程度上讲这一形象也就具有了更自由阐释意义的能力。对于符号化的剪刀而言，“剪刀”这个词在这里已退化成一个不具任何意义的概念。这里作为符号的剪刀，其能指与所指间的关系被完全切断，当所指消失时能指就变得更为自由、任意。剪刀形象也就具备了在不同语境中表达不同意义向人倾诉不同“故事”的功能，亦如毛旭辉自己所讲“当剪刀立起时有种祈祷的感觉、有时又可以使人联想到权力、而这把植物化了的黄颜色的剪刀则又给人一种春天的感觉……”可以说这一阶段剪刀形象已经成了毛旭辉的一种代言符，尽管今天看来剪刀形象似乎已经形成了一种“程式”，但同那些僵化死去的“程式”相比，这是一种“变化的程式”，每次他的剪刀形象总会焕发出新的生命力，召唤着无穷的想象力。“我画的剪刀是有变化的，是有变化的程式化，画每把剪刀时投入的感觉是不一样的”。同前一阶段相比，现在的剪刀形象更加情感化，更加人性化，蕴含了更多的人文精神，更多的对社会的关怀，在不同的语境中传递出不同的情感和意义。剪刀已和他的精神高度融为一体，剪刀就是他精神在画面上的投射呈现，他的喜怒哀乐都通过剪刀默默地体现出来，剪刀是他的化身也是他性格的一种体现。
作为八十年代“新具象”的倡导者之一，毛旭辉至今仍在贯彻这一思想，因此同西方那些运用抽象符号进行创作的大师相比，毛旭辉的符号——剪刀仍然是具象的，“我不太喜欢纯抽象的东西，我觉得有点玄，所以加进一些形象的东西在里边。这样可以使人沟通，容易与人交流，这也是艺术较原始的一种功能……我经常采用一种形象，这种形象是经过个人感受过程然后从我这里出来的那么一种形象、符号，我觉得较真实，可以和别人建立更多的交流的可能”。毛旭辉更多的是注重从现实中获得某种感受，抓住某种东西，然后逐步抽象化形成一种简洁、明确、有力的形象。这种形象虽具体但其所敞开的意义空间却具有无穷的召唤力，人们既可以从中感受到创作者的创作本意，也可以结合自己各自的经验体味出新的不同意义。纵观二十余年来毛旭辉的创作历程，尽管风格几易，然而其作品中一直保持不变的可能就是这一点。到现在他的任何画面都还是有形象的，只不过是抽象化了的形。
“艺术家一直在面对问题或说造型问题，剪刀就是我要去面对要去解决的问题，我不知道要花多长时间才可以解决掉”十年并不算长，但对于人的生命而言，十年却又是漫长的。十年来毛旭辉一直进行着剪刀系列的探索创作，至今仍没有停手的念头，作为一名艺术家作为一名艺术的殉道者毛旭辉与剪刀的情结仍将继续延续下去。
